Contextualization. Sustainable development is increasingly a demand from consumers and the focus of public policies in several countries, to the point that it has become one of the priority programs of the United Nations, according to the 2030 Agenda. However, it’s necessary to understand what types of impacts are generated by the activities of these Geographical Indications in sustainable development.
Purpose. Evaluate whether the specific literature points to positive, neutral or negative impacts of activities generated by Geographical Indications on sustainable development.
Methodology. The approach is qualitative. Data were collected from the Scopus database and the final sample is 29 articles. The United Nations definition of the Sustainable Development Goals was used as a criterion for evaluating the possible impacts of Geographical Indications on sustainability. Data are analyzed by content analysis.
Results. More than half of the articles show that Geographical Indications have a positive impact on sustainable development, while about 1/3 of the articles point to negative impacts. Contributions to literature and management practice are made at the end.
